Inspiration Board

I've been looking at games and animation for style inspiration. I'm a big fan of non-realistic games, especially if they have their own unique style that's full of colourful characters.

Two main series I've been looking at are Naughty Dog's Jak and Daxter series, and Insomniac Games' Ratchet and Clank series.

Jak II. (2003). Directed by Jason Rubin. United States: Naughty Dog, Inc.

Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. (2009). United States: Insomniac Games, Inc.
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. (2007). United States: Insomniac Games, Inc.

I've also had a look at the CGI Clone Wars series for its 3D interpretation of a 2D animation style and its hand painted textures.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars. (2008). United States: Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC.

I also found myself looking at the various animated series by Genndy Tartakovsky, specifically Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack.

Dexter's Laboratory. (1996). Created by Genndy Tartakovsky. United States: Cartoon Network Studios.
Samurai Jack. (2001). Created by Genndy Tartakovsky. United States: Cartoon Network Studios.

His animations have a clear visual style, it would be interesting to try and see this sort of style translated into 3D.

I'm also a fan of the narratives behind a fair amount of adventure style games. The hero's journey from small beginnings to the end results and how that journey affects the character's personality and appearance. The idea that a character can start as nothing, a zero in rags, and become a wealthy hero through a journey that takes them to interesting places and allows them to interact with interesting people, good or bad. What seems to be seldom explored though is the opposite idea, the journey of a hero losing everything, falling from grace.

That might be another idea to look into, to see the before and after or someone shaped into a hero or distorted into a villain.
