January 2013

Towards the end of 2012, I was looking into exploring characters in different genres but not in great detail at the time. I had the idea to look at how a group of characters might interact within a specific world, or how characters work with each other. I thought about creating a group of characters for a set world and chronicling their journey in some sort of one-shot comic or web comic.

This led me to consider creating characters for a fantasy world that weren't necessarily human, looking into existing fantasy races or attempting to create my own, using my inspirations as a basis.

I came up with a long list of potential characters but only designed two or three. It would take a lot of time to create so many characters and create social links for them in the world, I just wanted to explore the relationship between a small group.

For now, I'd rather focus on the first two characters and how they work together, how they can compliment each other. Even though I prefer more cartoon or animation style, I'd like to try at least one or more realistic characters. Each character is likely to carry props such as weapons or items.

Not only that but I find my own interests to be quite fluid, they change so often, it's difficult to stick to a single genre or type of character, or style. I started revisiting the idea of doing a character for different themes or genres. I'd like to have a go at doing a science fiction character, or a survival horror character or creature, etc. That way I'm not limited to a single idea for the duration of my MA. The two characters I've been focusing on can fit into the "fantasy" category.

As another tie in with the idea of doing characters from different genres, I recently discovered the BioWare CGHUB 3D Challenge. If I had known about this sooner, I would have loved to have entered it. I might have missed the actual contest but I still want to do it. It would also tie in to the other work I did at the end of 2012.
